Strepitous!

Okay. This is just weird.

I’ve been getting hits from all over the place—Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Virginia, even Spain, of all places—and the referring URL has been from Ask.com. I don’t know anybody in any of those places, with the exception of one person in New York, and she visits very rarely. All these mystery users have one thing in common: they all found this place searching for a single word: strepitous, a basically obsolete (or, at any rate, seldom used) word meaning noisy or boisterous. This word has its origin in Latin:

strepitus (m.) - a loud noise, clash, rattle; strepo, strepere, strepui - to make a noise; to clatter, rattle.

My best guess is that Ask.com is serving up this page as one of its results based on this old post. So, for all you Ask.com folks: there’s the definition, if that’s what you were looking for. You’re welcome.

What I can’t wrap my minuscule brain around is why all these different people are searching for that obscure word with the same search engine. Is this some kind of meme I haven’t heard about yet?

The mystery has been explained! Kim wrote to set me straight:

“..strepitous was a clue in the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzle… that is why all the folks were looking for you”

I never would have figured that out on my own in a million years.

Thanks, Kim.
