I’ve been getting hits from all over the place—Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Virginia, even Spain, of all places—and the referring URL has been from Ask.com. I don’t know anybody in any of those places, with the exception of one person in New York, and she visits very rarely. All these mystery users have one thing in common: they all found this place searching for a single word: strepitous, a basically obsolete (or, at any rate, seldom used) word meaning noisy or boisterous. This word has its origin in Latin:
My best guess is that Ask.com is serving up this page as one of its results based on this old post. So, for all you Ask.com folks: there’s the definition, if that’s what you were looking for. You’re welcome. What I can’t wrap my minuscule brain around is why all these different people are searching for that obscure word with the same search engine. Is this some kind of meme I haven’t heard about yet?
