I might have shrugged and left it at that, figuring perhaps I’d picked up an admirer/sycophant/enraged stalker through one of my many posts on the Something Awful Forums, but, on a whim, decided to perform a Google Searchon the username. It returned over 700 hits, most of them from a bewildering array of forums, including sites in Turkish, Polish, Hungarian, Spanish, and Italian. This was suspicious, especially since the majority of those user accounts had been registered this month. This still got me nowhere closer to who or what “adol77dai51″ was, but then I found one of the search results led to several posts from “adol77dai51″ on this commercial blog for a *Sniff sniff sniff* is that the scent of spam being cooked up somewhere? Bye-bye.

haha, i registered here just to tell you, i experienced the same thing.

Well…I just did the same thing as brenton (above). I posted on a seldom-used blog on Saturday (9/22), and — in an unusual move — manually pinged services using the setup list in WordPress. Normally I just let Ping-o-Matic take care of it. I don’t usually get any subscribers, so Mr (or Ms) adol77dai51 caught my eye! After seeing the hundreds of sites to which adol77dai51 has now subscribed, I think I can safely bounce it from the sub list. Oh, and BTW, cool blog.

Yeah, I’ve actually been getting a lot of hits lately just because of this spammer. Now if only I was selling something…. Viagra, anyone? Stock tips? No?

I just had the same experience on my site. My blog still has that new blog smell (and is currently an unfocused mess, with me still figuring out who/what I want to be on it), and I got a registered user last night. Sweet! I’m surprised, though, that there were no comments on any of my posts from this new user. I mean why bother to register if you’re not going to comment, right? So I start to type his name into the search bar in Firefox, and lo and behold, Google autocompletes his name for me! Now that got me suspicious, to say the least. Why on earth would Google get enough searches for this guy to autocomplete his name? Sure enough, site after site of postless registrations to random communities, some of which weren’t even in English. I did notice a whole bunch of posts from “him” on an anime site, posting videos of anime clips, but otherwise no actual content. And then I found your page. Thanks a lot for cluing me in on this one. I may go ahead and leave the user for now so I still feel special about having a registration, but I’ll keep an eye out for any comments “he” posts.

My guess is that our mutual friend is a bot, registering accounts on all sorts of sites, waiting for The Signal to be given, flooding blogs and forums and whatnot with pump-and-dump stock fraud spam. I would advise you to not feel sentimental about it, first registration or no. Our buddy adol77dai51 certainly isn’t going to pull his punches when he/she/it fills your blog with crap, so you shouldn’t, either.
TurboFool on September 25th, 2007 at 11:52 AM #
Well, I set WordPress to require authorization on comments for users who haven’t previously had a comment authorized, so if he does strike, it won’t hit my page without my approval. WordPress rocks.

Hey, two months later and “adol77dai51″ just registered on my blog, which is relatively unknown outside of my group of friends. Googled him and found myself here. The first site his name turned up on was kobebryantfans.net, which made me laugh. Anyway, nice site.
The Cubelodyte on November 7th, 2007 at 11:30 AM #
I’m convinced adol77dai51 is a bot. This guy’s blog post talks about the same user registration, and what’s more, the “user” has the same mail address I remember from the initial bot registration: adolfodaine77@gmail.com, as does a similar case mentioned on the German WordPress forums. I’m actually surprised that only one such bot registration attempt was ever made on this site. You’d think that, having been successful all over the place, the bot would be trying to register all sorts of fake users on sites. Maybe something in WP 2.3.1 now prevents this behavior; I dunno. Weird.
The Cubelodyte on November 13th, 2007 at 7:52 AM #
UPDATE: It’s back! The bot just reregistered the same account, same e-mail address. I guess I’ll have to hunt around for some sort of captcha plugin for the registration page.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this…this person just signed up on my blog today (http://mhryvnak.net) and I had no idea who it was. A quick google search brought me here. Now that I know it is a spammer, *delete*. I’m linking you also because your blog is awesome. I used to do Tech Support for an ISP for 4 years so I can relate.

No problem! It’s all part of the service. Thanks for the ego boost! I’m sure my coworkers will appreciate the expansion of my already insufferable pride.

Perhaps, via another Google search, Mark Taylor of http://marksaves.com (a site full of repooplican unright wing kvetch) is this adol77dai51?
The Cubelodyte on November 29th, 2007 at 10:35 AM #
Possibly. In September I did see a blog comment from Taylor somewhere, where he stated that WordPress (either his instance or the .org site) gave him that username “automatically” somehow, like it was doling them out randomly since he didn’t define one. Political sites don’t usually spam unless they’re of the tinfoil-hat variety, though. Unless he’s connected with someplace like the aforementioned Pink Sheet loan company, I’m not convinced it’s him. Whoever/whatever it is has certainly been busy registering everywhere.

This dude adol77dai51 sure gets around. We should probably create a world wide club for anyone who’s had him/her/it joined their site.
The Cubelodyte on December 5th, 2007 at 10:27 AM #
That would be a big club, but imagine the possibilities: if all its members donate a single dollar to a general fund, we could easily raise enough money to develop an application that would automatically kick adol77dai51’s sorry ass off of any blog or forum he joins. It’s still very strange that despite the astonishing number of site registrations that have happened, almost no actual posts are contributed to this mystery agent.
