March of the Spambots
Filed under (Minor Details) by The Cubelodyte on June 13, 2008 @ 10:52 am

SpamMy posts about WordPress spambot registration have generated a surprising amount of traffic to this site. While few, if any, of those visitors are actually hanging around after the fact, I’m getting enough hits that I figure I’m doing the WP community some tiny bit of good by raising what alarm I can.

Today’s bot registered with a name of jacob73kolp and an e-mail address of jacobkolp@gmail.com.

This brings the total of known bots to five:

It looks like I also found a CAPTCHA plugin that will work better than Skullbit’s, which worked only briefly on the test server and then simply refused to function properly thereafter. Hopefully this new one’ll be enough to keep the bots out.

No problem! As I said, I figure it’s a my good deed for the day to let everybody know this “user” is a phony and probably up to no good.

I had the same bot join my page. Thanks for posting this. I’ve since removed this bot.

Where did you get the image verifier? Is it a plugin? I’m looking now.

Thanks.

The CAPTCHA I’m using is part of a plugin called Register Plus (I went back to Skullbit’s plugin after finding they’d released a new version recently).

The particular image verifier I’m using can be used with Register Plus, and requires registration with reCAPTCHA. It’s free and very easy.

Hi,

Thanks for the public service announcements, I have just had ken and jacob register in the last week. Tomorrow I will load up Register Plus and reCAPTCHA. I had enough trouble registering on your site, skwinting at the image verifier – but they may have been the red wine !

Adrian.

Chuck, I appreciate the reCAPTCHA. It’s working well. Not that I get a lot of people signing up. :)

You’re welcome! Hopefully it’ll prevent the bots from registering again. It seems like a new one pops up every two or three weeks, so if one hasn’t shown up by late July I’ll be cautiously optimistic that the plugin is keeping them out.

The bot seems to enjoy #7. I had half been expecting a visitor to register at my lipservice blog recently (maybe!), because I emailed JO at million dollar article and asked him to reply to my blog post.

So after seeing jacob73kolp register and not make a comment at all yet, I thought I would google the name. Not what I had originally thought, but yeah, more or less my luck of the draw in regards to responses.

Thanks for sharing the info!

PS. used to hang out with some sievers’ in Kentucky. :)
